Highlights of Hopewell Baptist Church
Hopewell Baptist Church was formed in 1877 and received into the Mercer Association in 1878. Hopewell was presented by Rev. Asa Stephenson who was the area missionary. The records indicate that the first meeting place was a schoolhouse. Rev. M. D. Pope pastored Hopewell during the beginning years (1881-1886) and the membership increased to sixty four. In 1911, Hopewell became a part of the Colquitt County Association.
In the early 1920's, Hopewell met as a quarter time church, holding services on Saturday and Sunday. The 1930's brought about a half time church and by 1949, Hopewell was involved in full time service under the leadership of Rev. J. W. McCorvey. In 1977, a book entitled A Century for Christ was written to commemorate the first one hundred years of church history.
At the present time, the church building is located near the same plot of land as the original building. This is the fourth building, which was erected in 1956. During the later part of 1990 and the early part of 1991, the church built a new social events building as well as a recreational and activity building. Also, the choir loft was enlarged to seat thirty members and an audio system was installed in the sanctuary.
The organizations at Hopewell include Sunday School, Discipleship Training, two Brotherhood organizations, and the Royal Ambassadors chapter. Also, Hopewell has the Women's Missionary Union, including Acteens, Girls in Action, and the Mission Friends, which have all received distinguished awards the past several years. Furthermore, the church has an adult choir and two children's choirs, a children's church ministry, and a senior adult organization. God has wonderfully blessed Hopewell Baptist Church.
